Why this icon
I was captivated by the majestic presence of the Virgin Mary. Her gaze, filled with dignity, meets ours directly, while the Christ Child seems to look beyond us with a serene expression. This contrast between their gazes gives the icon a depth that particularly moved me.
About this icon
The Virgin Mary stands full length, carrying the Christ Child and presenting him to the person contemplating the icon. Her hand directs our gaze towards her Son: her presence invites us to draw near to him and to receive his word.
The letters ΜΡ ΘΥ abbreviate the Greek Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, “Mother of God”. This title expresses the mystery of the Incarnation: the child Mary holds in her arms is the Son of God made truly human. The icon brings together the tenderness of a mother carrying her child and the mystery of God coming close to humanity.
Mary’s upright, peaceful posture can be read as an image of faithfulness and trust. She invites us, in turn, to welcome Christ into our lives. In Christian prayer, she is also approached as a mother who intercedes for those who turn to her and entrusts them to her Son.
The Child’s gold-highlighted garment and cross-bearing halo indicate that he is more than an ordinary child. Held in Mary’s arms, he unites the vulnerability of childhood with the dignity of the Saviour. The icon invites contemplation of a God who chooses closeness and humility.
This panel forms a pair with the standing Christ, written in the same format. According to my teacher, the two models belong to the Ukrainian iconographic tradition. Side by side, they invite a single movement of prayer: Mary presents her Son, and Christ welcomes us with his blessing.
