Why this icon
I wanted to write this icon of Saint Odile as a gift for a friend who shares her name. This friend has been writing icons herself for many years, and it was through her that I discovered this art.
About this icon
Saint Odile, patron saint of Alsace, lived around the late seventh and early eighth centuries. She is associated with the foundation of Hohenbourg Abbey, on the mountain that now bears her name. According to the account of her life handed down by tradition, she was born blind and received her sight at baptism. She is therefore invoked by those suffering from eye conditions; her story also invites reflection on the inner light of faith.
Here she appears as an abbess, facing the viewer, with a calm, attentive gaze. The crozier recalls her responsibility for guiding a religious community. The open book bears the words “Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut” (“The Lord is my light and my salvation”, Psalm 27 [26]). This verse links her traditional story to her spiritual vocation: the light she receives is also the light of trust in God.
The deep red of her mantle gives the figure warmth and strength. The darker folds and brighter red highlights create a rhythm that draws the eye towards the book and face. This colour can evoke the intensity of a life devoted to God and to others, without implying that Odile was a martyr.
The white veil, shaded with soft pink and grey tones, contrasts with the red mantle and frames the face. It can suggest simplicity, purity of heart and the commitment of religious life. The ochre-yellow background warms the whole image, while the golden halo signifies holiness and participation in divine light. The dark green border provides a quieter surround that brings out the luminous centre.
These colours do not form a rigid code: their meaning also comes from the way they work together. Here, the contrast between the dark border, the rich mantle and the light veil and halo supports the theme of light expressed in the book. Odile’s steady presence invites a prayer for clear sight, both outwardly and within the heart.
