Why this icon

I wanted to give my sister an icon. As my brother-in-law is named Michel, the figure of the archangel naturally came to mind. By depicting him, I wanted to offer them a sign of protection and entrust their family to the one whom Christian tradition invokes as a defender against evil.

About this icon

The name Michael means “Who is like God?”. In Christian tradition, he is the defender of God’s people and the leader of the heavenly hosts. The Book of Revelation presents him fighting the dragon with his angels (Revelation 12:7–9): an image of the struggle against evil and of God’s victory.

Here, Michael is shown as a winged young man, wearing a red mantle over a richly ornamented garment. His wings recall his angelic nature, while the slender staff he holds suggests his service to God. His inclined head, open hand and peaceful expression bring out an attitude of attentiveness rather than the force of a warrior.

The gold of his halo and the fine lines of his wings stand out against the dark background. This contrast can be read as an evocation of heavenly light. The icon invites contemplation of a strength rooted in faithfulness to God, rather than in violence.

Devotion to Saint Michael has left a lasting mark on Europe. In Italy, the sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo on the Gargano is an ancient centre of pilgrimage. In France, the foundation of Mont-Saint-Michel is traditionally linked to appearances of the archangel to Bishop Aubert in 708. For centuries, these sanctuaries have welcomed pilgrims seeking prayer and protection.

The many churches and shrines dedicated to him bear witness to this enduring devotion. Beyond the image of a heavenly warrior, Michael invites Christians to resist evil, remain steadfast in faith and place their trust in God.
