Why this icon
Deeply attached to Franciscan spirituality, I wanted to depict Saint Francis. I drew inspiration from Piero Cassentini’s pictorial interpretation, whose expressive power moved me deeply.
About this icon
Saint Francis stands with his arms raised in prayer beneath a night sky and a crescent moon. The image recalls his Canticle of the Creatures, in which he praises God for Brother Sun and Sister Moon, for the stars, the wind and the water.
The tall, narrow format draws the eye upward, along the line of his prayer.
