Why this icon

I wrote this icon for my mother-in-law’s birthday, taking inspiration from a photograph she had taken during a trip to Romania. It showed a Virgin and Child whose fairly modern style had particularly appealed to her. I wanted to draw on this model to give her an icon that would echo that encounter.

About this icon

The Mother of God inclines her head towards the Christ Child, while both faces remain turned towards the person contemplating the icon. This closeness expresses a maternal bond without closing the scene in on itself: the viewer is invited into their presence.

The letters ΜΡ ΘΥ abbreviate the Greek Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, “Mother of God”. This title points to the mystery of the Incarnation: the child beside Mary is the Son of God made human. Her motherhood bears witness to God’s closeness to humanity.

The Child raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing. His frontal gaze and composed expression give him a solemn presence. The cross inscribed in his halo recalls that he is Christ, the Saviour: even in childhood, his identity is revealed through the icon’s symbolic language.

Gold occupies a large part of the composition, from the halos to the garments and background. It can be read as an evocation of divine light rather than natural illumination. The finely drawn folds and ornamental motifs give the figures dignity, while the red border frames their presence.

Mary’s gently inclined face and the Child’s blessing bring together tenderness and solemnity. This icon invites us to entrust ourselves to the Mother of God and to turn, with her, towards Christ.
